Alief Football Films

Before 1966, Alief was a basketball town. Everyone in town was at the high school games, and every able bodied boy and girl played. At least it seemed that way. But that changed in the fall of 1966. Bill Hunter came to Alief and introduced us to football.

In 1969, we made it to the regional finals. That's as far as you could go in Class B at that time. We lost a heartbreaker at Cy-Fair to Montgomery, 16-6. We spotted them 23 pounds a man on a wet field and played them to a standstill. With about 5 minutes left in the game, we trailed 10-6 - and had a first an goal. I thought we were about to punch the ball in and win the regional championship. It didn't happen that way. We fumbled, and they ran down the field and put the game out of reach with a late touchdown.

The Bears running game built up steam during the season. By the first Orchard game, all three backs were getting through holes into the secondary and making long runs. David Henderson, Billy Davis, and Tim Donegan ran wild for the rest of the district season and the bi-district game.

Coach Hunter still had some 16mm film of that season, which we are going to gradually transfer to this site. The schedule for the season is here - scroll down to "Sophomore." The program from that year's Splendora game is here - you might want to look up some of the players numbers.
