ALIEF WINS DISTRICT MEET

In their first district track meet since advancing to District 26-A, the Alief track team, coached by Byron Rushing, took district over five schools, including Tidehaven who had the district Championship for seven years.

Nine Alief runners will continue to the Regional track meet at Victoria on Saturday, April 24. They are:

Mark Kennedy, 2nd-pole vault
Mike Fussell, 2nd-High jump
Steve Ogden, 1st-880 yd. dash, 1st-mile relay
Paul Scott, 2nd-220 yd. dash, 1st-mile relay, 2nd-mile run
Tim Dones, 2nd-330 IH
Jim Ross, 1st-mile run
Gary Wolff, 2nd-mile run
Steve Cox, 1st-mile relay
Tommy Russell, 1st-mile run

The following boys will not be going to Regional, but without them, the Alief track team could not have won district. They are:

Steve Sekal, 4th-shot, 3rd-discus
Joe Tapia, 4th-discus
Bill Herndon, 3rd-high jump, 4th-440 yd. relay
Tim Donegan, 4th-long jump
Beau Sharbrough, 3rd-880 yd. dash

BOY'S TRACK TEAM TAKES DISTRICT HONOR

The 1971 District 26-A track meet was held at Tidehaven. All boys placing first or second in this meet will advance to Regional. Mark Kennedy set a new school record in the Pole Vault with an 11'6". This placed him second at Tidehaven. Mike Fussell jumped to second in the High Jump and Bill Herndon took fourth. In the Discus Throw Steve Sekal placed third and Joe Tapia fourth. Steve also took third in the Shot Put.

In individual running events, Roger Walker finished fifth in the 440 and Tim Dones took second in the 330 Intermediate Hurdles. Paul Scott came in second in the 220 Dash with Steve Cox running fourth in the same event. Both boys finished in the money in the 100 Dash - Scott,second; Cox, third. Cox will be running the 100 at Regional because Paul is scheduled in two other events.

In the 880, Steve Ogden posted a time of 2:06, followed by Beau Sharbrough (third) and Ricky Hall (fifth). The Mile Run was fully dominated by Alief. Jim Ross, Gary Wolff and Steve Morrow won first,second,and third respectively. The final event of the meet was the Mile Relay. This event determined the district championship. The team, composed of Paul Scott, Steve Cox, Tommy Russell and Steve Ogden, finished first in the grand finale which saw Alief again cop district honors.
