Alief High 1973

October's Newsletter, Volume II

This committee has been very busy this month, making sure to have something for everyone.  We are doing our best to make this event memorable and fun.  It’s going to be such a pleasure to see everyone again!

Reunion Date and Location Chosen !!!

Well - we are definitely having the Reunion, so mark your calendars for the weekend of June 21, 2003 !!! Plans are already in place for our biggest and best Alief Class of 73 Reunion yet ! The Committee, after viewing several different venues around the city, has chosen the J.W. Marriott Hotel on Westheimer, near Galleria, as the site for the Reunion on the Weekend of June 21, 2003. The search committee considered the following criteria in selecting the Marriott:

Style and space - Marriott is a lovely hotel, fairly new with plenty of space available. We will have a large ballroom for the main event, plus access to various other areas around the hotel for social activities, such as a planned "Poolside Happy Hour" activity, and a memorial service Sunday for those classmates who have passed away. There's plenty of room for a dance floor, for those who want to boogie to the beat of 70's music from the live band we are arranging.

Services - the Marriott offered a great meal service choice, at a very competitive rate compared to other hotels. They will also accommodate individuals with special dietary restrictions, provided we give them advance notice !

Location - Marriott is centrally located right across from Galleria, nearby many restaurants and clubs for those who want to continue celebrations after the Saturday evening festivities.

Transportation - there is plenty of parking at the Marriott, including a parking garage, free parking across the street, and a large drug store parking lot nearby as well. For those coming from out of town, there is a shuttle service from either Hobby or IAH to the hotel for a nominal fee.

Rooms - many folks, especially those from out of town, prefer to have a nice hotel where they can party, then just go to their room, rather than drive or find their way home. The Marriott rooms are lovely and we have negotiated a special rate of $69 per night for Reunion participants.

Cost - as always, we are doing our best to give everyone the most Reunion activities we can, at the best price we can negotiate. We feel like, of all the hotels and other sites we investigated, this one will be the most comfortable and fun place to get together, at a price  that is comparable to the 20 year Reunion - what a value !

Other activities being investigated are a Spa Day, Golf Tournament, and other possibilities, so there will be something of interest for everyone, in addition to the fun  of seeing your  friends. We welcome your participation on the Planning Committee if you are interested, and look forward to seeing EVERYONE at the Reunion.  To make reservations, please call 1-800-228-9290, and make sure to say you are with the Alief High School Reunion, June 20-22.

RENEW and RELAX

Renew old friendships and yourself!! We have a wonderful Saturday (June 21, 2003) planned for everyone who wishes to join in the fun.  Plan on spending the day with us at the Institut Clarins in the SAKS Fifth Avenue (Galleria) just across the street from the hotel for the evening’s activities.  There will be combination of packages for services (massage, facial, pedicure, manicures, etc. for under $100!!

So save your $$.  --  Ask Santa for it for Christmas, save you lunch monies ($5 a week and you are there) or shop at HEB like the commercials say (she buys a motorcycle for goodness sake) but be ready for the treat.

Guys (if you have the guts) and dolls plan to join in this fabulous treatment…..after 30 years YOU DESERVE IT!!  Visit the website for a peak inside the royal treatment at http://www.spaclarins.com/.  Watch the newsletters for many more details – but prepare to be pampered!!

From the Decorating Committee:

Center pieces are being made for the tables that are going to be decoupage' on one side with "NOW" and the other side "THEN".

To decorate our center pieces per our theme "NOW AND THEN", I'm asking that everyone look for your school memorabilia any type that can be xeroxed.  For example pictures that I can use to compare what outfits were being worn in 1973 and what is being worn today.  Also, I can use them for hair styles also.  Any type of advertisements during our High School Year will help too.  You can send a Xerox copy or the original photo and I'll return it.

Calling for Memorabilia

The make the weekend event more meaningful, we are asking you to bring photos, trophies, letter jackets, cheerleader outfits/horns/pom-poms, drill team outfits, ribbons, etc.  We would like to display these through out the weekend for your enjoyment.  Please make sure that they are labeled with your name and address, so that they can be returned.

Also, we are asking that everyone in the class send in a baby picture or elementary school picture and a current picture by April 15th.  We are going to play a game.  Please make sure that your name and address is on the back.  Send these to Lousie Tapia Gierisch, 9414 Beringwood, Houston, TX  77083.  Xerox copies are just fine.

Is Photography Your Thing?

You are needed!  It cost so much to hire a photographer, so if you would like to volunteer yourself or your spouse to take pictures or even video the event, it would be greatly appreciated.  We are wanting to put together a video/slide presentation during the banquet also.  Please contact Marcus Carpenter at marcuscarpenter1973alief@yahoo.com.
